About
This Space
Hidden up a winding country road in the heart of La Selva National park, with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and forest, il Capriolo is the perfect hideaway for a relaxed Tuscan vacation. The 17th century farmhouse and adjacent hay barn had been abandoned for generations when the Italian/American owners stumbled upon them. After two years of hard labor, a total renovation and careful restoration have been completed, transforming the villa into the quintessential luxury vacation rental in Tuscany. The farmhouse and hay barn can be rented together or separately, making this property the perfect retreat for families and groups both big and small. As it is located an easy drive from Siena (30 minutes), Florence (less than an hour), San Gimigniano (30 minutes), Monteriggioni (15 minutes), the ocean (I hour), Cortona (just over an hour), . . . . . the villa is ideally placed to use as a base to explore Tuscany.
The main 400m2/ 4300 SQ FT villa has 5 bedrooms; all with en suite bathrooms (3 with showers, one with tub and hand held shower, and one with shower and tub) spread out over three floors. The annexe (hay barn) has three bedrooms and three en suite bathrooms. Rented together, they can accommodate up to 16 people in complete comfort, luxury and privacy.
The large pool (5 x 14.5 meters), shared between the two villas, is dramatically set against the backdrop of forest and distant hills among lavender, rosemary, rose bushes and other local Tuscan flora. There is ample pool furniture (seating and umbrellas) provided, along with covered outdoor dining tables, enabling one to spend leisurely moments lounging in comfort.
The main 5-bedroom villa provides all the luxuries of modern living with all the allure of Old World Italy. The inside of this 17th century farmhouse has been completely renovated, while the outer structure remains in its original state. The stones were taken out, cleaned and lovingly placed back, adhering to the original design of the farmhouse. Great thought was put into the design of the villa in order to retail the original charm while providing all of the needs of modern day living.
Step into the huge double living room with 9 meter high traditional Tuscan beam ceiling, hand carved fireplace with a chocolate travertine mantle, two gorgeous arches, open chef’s kitchen and bar. Light streams through large double-glazed Tuscany windows, offering panoramic views and vistas at every turn. All of the rooms have ceiling fans, and all of the windows and doors throughout both houses are double-glazed and equipped with screens. A guest bathroom by one of the main entrances features a toilet, sink and washing machine (sorry, no dryer- it is not necessary under the Tuscan sun). There is a study with satellite/cable TV and internet access (sorry, no high speed available at this time).
The custom-designed kitchen is equipped with a large Whirlpool refrigerator (with ice maker), professional stovetop on a centrally located island, three-foot oven, two double stainless steel sinks, dishwasher, and custom made cabinets with black marble tops. Access to a covered outdoor eating patio with seating for 16 (not visible from the Barn House) is directly available from the kitchen. The large formal dining room is located below grade to ensure cool temperatures throughout the summer, and is accessed directly from the kitchen by means of a ramp of steps.
Next door to the main farmhouse, the 170m2 former hay barn has been transformed into a lovely and luxurious 3 bedroom villa. As in the main house, all of the rooms have ceiling fans, and all of the windows and doors are double-glazed and equipped with screens. It includes three large bedrooms, each with its en suite bathroom (2 with shower, one with sit-down tub and handheld shower).
The spacious designer kitchen has been made-to-order and includes a built-in dishwasher, professional stovetop, oven and double stainless steel sink. All the cabinets are custom made; pink travertine tops cover all work surfaces in the kitchen. A washing machine is located in a closet between the kitchen and downstairs bedroom (sorry, no dryer – it’s not necessary with the Tuscan sun!). The dining area and spacious living room connect to the kitchen through a pass-through opening. You will find Cable TV and internet access (sorry, high speed internet has not yet reached Capriolo) in the living room for your convenience. Step out of the living room and into the Italian countryside to find an enclosed private patio for outdoor dining (not visible from the Main house).
The charming and accommodating bi-lingual owners are American expats, who have been living full time in Italy for the past 20 years (also the owners of il Poggio: http://www.haveninparis.com/rental/poggio.php). They live close by on a separate estate that has been in their family since 1743, which includes a winery and olive tree holdings. They make wonderful Tuscan Extra Virgin Olive oil and various red Tuscan wines. They will happily organize many extra luxury services: catering, market shopping, cooking lessons, tours and hikes, bike rentals, hot air ballooning, wine tasting and tours of the winery, olive picking, additional cleaning and more, allowing you to have a truly relaxing Tuscan vacation rental experience. Additional maid service is available upon request.

Reviews
We were delighted to have rented this beautiful villa this past September. The Villa and the surrounding landscape was even more beautiful then we imagined. It has all the wonderful modern amenities and we loved the layout of all the rooms. We had 7 in out party and each couple had their own bedroom and bathroom with lots of privacy. Everything worked out perfectly. We absolutely loved the outdoor eating area and made use of the well equipped kitchen! They owners have a few adorable chickens that would visit us and treat us with fresh eggs for breakfast. We enjoyed the beautiful pool, played ping pong and took walks nearby. We didn't even turn on the TV but the wireless Internet came in handy occasionally. Vieri was an amazing host and took excellent care of us. Showing us the nearby area with visits to cheese factories and wineries that we would never have been able to find on our own. You do need a car to get around, but there are so many great towns nearby. I recommend a car that can handle going up a bit of a dirt road leading up to the villa, but overall the location of the villa is perfect for visits to many wonderful places nearby. I can't express enough how much we loved being there and can't wait to go back. Thank you to Vieri and Rebecca for your hospitality! Grazie...A presto!
My wife and I were among the group of 7 that wrote another review. We couldn't have asked for more a a beautiful setting to spend the week in Italy. The drive to the villa provides stunning views of the Italian countryside laden with grapevines and historic architecture. You are treated to an adventurous drive up the hillside on a gravel road that winds through the trees and surprises you with a beautiful villa settled on the hillside providing incredible views and stocked full of modern amenities. The location is fantastic for day trips to all the surrounding cities or just to enjoy the villa, pool etc. Last, but not least, the hosts of the villa were simply amazing. Vieri, having spent years in the area has knowledge of the region and it's offerings probably rivaled by none. We were treated to gourmet cheese tastings, a winery tour/tasting and a behind the scenes view of a beautiful crystal factory as we watched Italian artisans shape molten glass into beautiful works of art. I could go on ...
Our short stay at the villa has been very enjoyable. A great place to relax and unwind. We had fun in the swimming pool and enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. Many thanks from all of us.
Dear Vieri & Rebecca, I liked all the flowers and the view. And the pool was really good fun and the villa was good too. -Love from Henry (age 7)
Sixteen of us enjoyed seven wonderful days at La Tana. We celebrated a 40th birthday party with good friends and used La Tana as our base to explore Tuscany. There is no question that this beautiful setting and magnificent estate made our trip. It is located central to more places than we could possibly visit. After hustling through busy Florence or trekking through quiet hilltop villages, we would end up back at La Tana to enjoy cooking classes, wine and olive oil tasting, and spend time together in the spacious kitchen and living area. Our dinners for sixteen were over the top and our evenings extended well into the star filled nights. The Salvadori's made us feel at home and were always available for advice on where to go, what to see, how to get there. Vieri has taken his Tuscan experience to heart in his cooking and winemaking. From the Chianti to truffle sauce to grilled steaks he is a wonderful chef and will please any gathering with a meal that will be remembered.
Your complex in the national park is truly gorgeous and we had a fantastic holiday. Despite a couple of days of rain we were able to make good use of the beautiful swimming pool. The location is very special and ideally located for touring. The concierge service was exceptional. We hope to return in the not too distant future. Continued success.
I am jealous of your life here in Italy. You have a wonderful home here and beautifully decorated. Thanks again.
Thank you for our enchanting two weeks in this beautiful place. Your house is perfectly appointed, and we could not have been more comfortable, nor have had a happier holiday.
Thanks so much for having such a wonderful villa for us to stay in. You are a fabulous cook and wine maker. I loved the shutters and the kitchen and the pool EVERYTHING! Can t wait to come back. You are living my dream!!!
Your place (the hay barn) is so comfortable and welcoming. Thank you for your lovely place. Enjoyed the beauty of Tuscany and the comforts of your home. Your home cooked meal was fabulous. See you again.
Thank you so much for going out of your way to making our stay in your beautiful villa so memorable. I was so grateful to you, Vieri (the owner), for helping me so much. Thank you again.
Your property is wonderful, especially for the children who have had their own space and plenty of it. The overall utility is well planned and much love was used in its construction and furnishing. The greatest compliment I can offer is an invitation to you to visit with us in Florida. Thank you.
We ve had an incredible time here. Your cooking was unforgettable, your wines are truly amazing, and our riding through the Tuscan countryside has been memorable. Thanks so much.
